The most common mistake? People pick a shade based on how their hair looks in strong sunlight. That almost always ends up too light. Look at your hair indoors, in daylight from a window, with no direct sun.
Start with your base. Are you naturally dark, dark brown, or blonde? That decides which group you're shopping in. Then look at the undertone. Does your hair lean toward ashy and cool, or golden and warm? This is where most people miss, because they only think light or dark, not warm or cool.
A trick we've used for 15 years: hold your hair up against a sheet of plain white paper. You'll see the undertone much more clearly than against your skin.
If you're still unsure, send us a photo. Take it in daylight, no filter, ideally with some hair down. We match for free. It takes us five minutes, and it saves you from a color that doesn't blend in.
One honest tip to finish: if you're between two shades, pick the darker one. Extensions that are slightly too dark melt into your own hair. Slightly too light lights up like a flag.
